Sawyer

Heaven watched her parents’ retreating backs with her mouth wide open in shock. I wasn’t the least fazed because frankly they seemed like real assholes. If they didn’t see the genius that was their daughter and appreciate her work, that was their loss.

When the door closed hard behind them, Heaven turned to face my direction, but rather than a face of excitement and appreciation for all the love I’d shown her during the conversation, she scowled. The big mean ferocious look wasn’t appealing at all.

Had I miss-judged this situation?

“How dare you tell them?”

It was a ridiculous question. Who wouldn’t tell the world how wonderful the woman was? “What? That you’re amazing?” We hadn’t used the word boyfriend or girlfriend, but I assumed supporting her was my job in this relationship.

“That I write trash!” she yelled the loudest I’d ever heard Heaven’s voice raise. Even when she was practically screaming in the haunted house.

“Your books are good.” Why did she think anything less? “They’re amazing.” I didn’t even like romance and I was sucked in from the first page. At one point two characters get a little kinky on a boat and it gave me more than enough fantasies to make our own little water-side celebration happen in the very near future.

“You had no right, Sawyer!” she yelled again as if she thought I’d lost my hearing in the last five minutes of our conversation.

What? How was she mad? What was going on? What happened to my cute sophisticated loving romance author who always spoke at an even keel? Who was this lady and why was she so upset because I thought she was amazing?

“I didn’t know your parents were clueless. Who didn’t tell their mom and dad about what they did for a living?” Why would she lie about something about like that?

As someone who planned to be self-employed soon, I understood and appreciated the hard work it took to support yourself through something you created. Heaven was almost thirty years old. Why hadn’t she told her family the truth about what she did? Even if she didn’t appreciate the gesture of me letting the cat out of the bag, maybe it had reached the time she grew up and took control over her own life.

“I trusted you. Now they think I write trash and will probably never talk to me again.”

“You don’t write trash!” This time my voice was yelling. “And who cares if they do? They don’t like what you do, that’s their problem.”

“They’re my parents.”

Did she believe I missed that fact? Her parents didn’t realize her awesomeness, but I did. I saw everything there was to see about Heaven, and all of it was perfect. She didn’t need to change a thing for me. She had no reason to lie about who she was or what she did for a living. From what I’d seen of the girl for the last few days, she was perfect—the best snowflake in a whole snowstorm.

I hadn’t made my way through her entire catalog of romance, but I planned to as quickly as possible.
